Story Time From Neil
Another story about cars. Take a good look at the one in this picture. As I recall the one that I’m remembering was very similar but a different color. As a matter of fact it was probably black. The top, however, were very similar. Anyhow this one day we were traveling along the road south of Upalco very near the place where the road to Arcadia branches off of the main Upalco to Roosevelt highway when the wind took the top right off our car. I can still see it, the top, rolling down through the fields to the east. Dad just kept driving our car that was now a convertible. Some farmer probably found our car top in his field and turned it into something useful like a canvas dam. The car of yester year and gas was 18 cents a gallon. Have a good day

Do you remember that song, June is busting out all over, I guess in some ways June 2009 did bust out all over with rain storms and cool weather. There was, however, the usual flowers and gardens and everyone’s gardens looked great, that is except my few rows of peas. I think they have grown to about four inches tall and then they stalled. So, no peas at my house this year. But black and red currents, I have a bumper crop. I have picked and Sharon and Charlene have picked and yet there are still currents to be picked. If all goes well they should all be in the freezer next week. Did everyone see the article in the Readers Digest about black currents telling how wonderful they are?
I did however take time out from picking and mowing to so as my doctor recommended and went and seen a skin doctor. This doctor Parkinson decided I had a thing on my forehead that needed to be removed. So as it turned out I now know what it is like to have a face lift. Or in this case a forehead lift. Only problem is so that both sides of my head will match I now need a tuck on the other side of my forehead. Oh well I’m sure I will be happy with it just as it is. The young woman who was over seeing the sewing up said “Perfect”. I told her that I remembered another time when a doctor and nurse pronounced one of my wounds perfect that when my wife got to see it she did not think it was so perfect. As I recall she expressed her feelings rather loudly. But then I guess it did not matter since I could cover that wound up with my pants.
Enough about wounds and berries, I went with Charlene and Van to see Marc, Cami and Jordan a week or so ago. It was a wonderful drive. Everything was so green that is everything but the farmer’s hay that was down and the farmers were hoping that it would stop raining long enough for the hay to dry. We had a wonderful visit. I hope that everyone is well.
Love, Neil

The weather is beautiful. Dad walked to Priesthood meeting. Then I walked up. Sister Roberts was walking too. We had good meetings. Windy Roberts and Shirley Mortenson talked on Histories. Made me want to get busy with ours. Hollis Hullinger was our visiting speaker.
We wrote to Reed and bore our testimonies to him. He is a wonderful grandson.
Sunday, June 15, 1980 Still the wind blows!
We were having a bath this morning when the Jerry’s called. They are coming to the States next week and will be here Sunday the 29th. They just hung up when Dewey called. They are still having Mt Saint Helen eruptions. Dewey says their raspberries are starting to bear. Wish ours were. They wished Dad a Happy Fathers Day. We went to church and I didn’t get the meat on. We were just finishing our T.V. dinners when the Darrell’s came. They wouldn’t let me fix dinner, so we went to Roosevelt and they had Tacos. Darrell worked on the new colored antenna until five o’clock. I fixed some sandwiches but they took them along. Dad slept part of the time and said he is freezing. So he went to bed. I surely hated to see Darrell and family go. Lenore called and talked for an hour. They are leaving for Alaska tomorrow. Then I called Ruth and we talked for about 25 minutes. Dad is awake and says he is more rested.

Hi From Charlene
I am almost moved out of Harvest Elementary, but there is much work to do at Bonneville
yet before it is livable.
I broke my toe! I broke it last Sunday and started a new semester at the Y on Monday.
It hurt to walk from graduate parking to the Talmage building, but now I have a handicap
permit. It still hurts to walk...but now I don't have to go so far.
Everyone stay healthy!

From The Thorpes
Hello Family!
We hope everyone is doing well and that your summers are going to be fun filled! We have been busy with our summer vacation plans! The very last weekend of the May, Susannah went to Newport beach with a college roommate to hang out and have time with the girlies! Another roommate was supposed to come, but sadly was unable to, after her grandmother died. We ended up having a good time, and it was fun to catch up with each other!! The following weekend, we went to Las Vegas. We flew out on Sunday, but decided to stay closer to the airport the night before our flight to make the traveling easy (so I thought). Kevin had other ideas up his sleeve. On the way down to Sunnyvale, he picked an Andrea Bocelli CD to listen to. He started this whole dialogue about how he had read in the paper that because Andrea Bocelli was only going to 6 cities on this tour that all the tickets were sold super fast, and that if you wanted tickets now, you could get them on Ebay for extreme amounts of money. He let me sit and ponder that for a while then tossed an envelope at me! Much to my sheer delight and pleasure, he had bought tickets to his San Jose Concert months and months ahead of time. The show was phenomenal! He did an amazing job and had guest singers in, who did very well too! I thought there was no way that our trip to Las Vegas could top that! We flew to Las Vegas the next morning and checked into our hotel. We did a lot of walking, went in and out of all the hotel casinos, watched the Bellagio fountains, and went downtown. As we were walking though the casino of our hotel, I decided to sit down and learn how to play mini Paigow poker. I placed my bet, which was $5. I was dealt my cards and to my utter shock and amazement, I ended up with a Royal flush! The Payout was 250-1. So I ended up winning $1250. We left the table and decided that we would use the money to buy Lion King tickets. That show was amazing, and we would recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it yet! We also decided that since we had the big win that we wanted to go to a cirque du soleil show, and bought tickets for Mystere. That was also a fabulous show!! The whole time there we were walking and staying busy. Now that we are home we cant figure out what to do at night to entertain ourselves!!! Our trip was a great one, where we were spoiled! We ended up bringing home lots of money too, so that was nice!! We are looking forward to going to see Wicked in San Francisco at the end of this month! We bought these tickets in December, as a special treat for each other for the summer! Now we feel totally cultured after 4 amazing shows in one month! How will we survive living like commoners for the rest of the summer? Our other fun trip coming up is to go to Southern California, for the first ever Thorpe Family Reunion, in July. Kevins parents have rented a beach house that is on a private beach. It has a ton of rooms, so all couples and some of the kids will have their own space. There will be a big kitchen and we will all take turns cooking meals for everyone! It should be a lot of fun! Everyone is talking about going to Sea World, and maybe on a dolphin experience, as well as tons of beach time and time spent being together! It also helps that I absolutely love his family!! We are eager to hear about all the fun experiences you will all be having this summer as well as seeing pictures! We love you!!Susannah and Kevin Thorpe
Greetings from the Gunnell Family!
We had a great May.
Ethan played Captain Gooding in his school play “Celebration of a Nation”.
He was General Washington’s right hand man and yelled out all the commands for the firing of the cannon.
James class created a Hohokom Indian Village for their class project. He was in his element building things with mud.
They invited visitors. The display was a good as a museum!
James and Steve went to Scout Camp and had a great time. (11 yr olds can attend if their father attends too.)
Ethan celebrated his 9th birthday on the 6th of June. Time flies.
We are gearing up for the long hot summer with swim team and other activities.
Love to all!

We went to all meetings. After Sacrament meeting they gave all the mothers a violet. I ask for one for Beverly but later found her girls had one for her. I sent it home with Audrey. As we were just going home we stopped to ask Ruth to come to our house but Dallas caught up with her and ask her to his house. He also asked us. We accepted the invitation and rode up with her to Dallas house. We really enjoyed ourselves. He took us in his truck to see his bull, lambs, sheep and cows. The truck didn’t hesitate in any of the mud. It was an enjoyable day. Soon after we came home Darrell called. Then just as we were going to bed Marylyn and Jerry called. We were so thrilled to hear from them. Neil called too. So we heard from all. Dewey’s card came first, but he didn’t call. This ended a lovely Mothers day.

At Altonah, as Charlene and I were placing flowers, a tall nice looking young women came up to us and said to me, “You look like a Murray.” I told her “It must be because I am.” It was one of Norman Murray’s daughters. We had a nice visit as we took a few minute to get acquainted. The trip out and back was nice as it gave us the opportunity, once again, to see Mother Nature at work.

News From Natalie
After visiting Purdue, the University of Illinois, and Penn State, Nathan and Nicole have decided to attend Penn State's nuclear engineering program in the fall. They are excited to be in such a great historical area of the country. Nicole is finishing up the school year teaching Physics at Lone Peak High School and will be looking for a job teaching high school in Pennsylvania.I am back home for the summer after finishing a great year at BYU. I'm glad to be finished with my statistics class most of all. The other day Elder Brownell consented to pose for a picture with me so I could send it in to the family newsletter-it was great getting to know one of my distant cousins while he prepares to serve the Lord. I am very grateful for his example and willingness to serve. Natalie, Karly, Abby, and Mariel have started practices for Beauty and the Beast which will be at the outdoor SCERA theater this summer. They will be playing a champagne bottle, spoons, and a toothpick, respectively. Much to the chagrin of the family, Dad tore out most of our lawn to extend the garden. As long as he will be the one weeding we will eat the produce (similar to the little red hen story). Mom is still making quilts and is busy as the relief society president. Everyone is excited for school to finally end and summer to start!
A Story from the life of Stephen Markham.
When Grandpa Markham settled in Spanish Fork, he was always kind and good to the Indians. They used to come to him to be doctored.
He was a sort of doctor. One day there was a wagon containing two bad looking Indians who drove up to the gate. Sitting by them was
a little Indian girl. She was very thing and sickly looking. The Indians climbed down off the wagon and told Grandpa they wanted to sell the girl.
Grandpa said, “I’ve got lots of little girls of my own.” They told him that if he didn’t buy her, they would dash her brains out against the tree.
He asked them what they wanted and they said they wanted an oxen. He told them he needed his oxen to plow his land.
They picked the girl up by her heels and swung her toward the tree. Grandpa said, “I’ll will give you a young oxen.” They said “All right, we
will take the young oxen.” Grandpa carried the little girl into the house to Grandma. They had burned her hand and feet trying to get people
to feel sorry for her. Grandma took her and bather her and dressed he wounds. She lived with them until she was a grown woman.

Gunnell Highlights
Ethan earned his Cub Scout Wolf Badge.
James earned his Arrow of Light.
The entire Gunnell Family has been labeled at Right Wing Extremists by our former governor and current Secretary of Homeland Security.
We earned this label by attending the Tax Day Tea Party in Phoenix. We had a grand time!
We are also happy to have Tucker here visiting. This weekend Kerstin is here too!
From Marylyn and Jerry
It is a beautiful day here in Petaluma, CA! I want you all to know what a great Murray family I think we have. We are so blessed!Jerry and I safely returned from a month in England enjoying the beautiful fishing villages of the Cornwall, the quaint and charming cottages and villages of the Cotswolds, the bleakness of the moors, lambing season, rock walls and countryside of the Dales and the beautiful scenery and vegetation of the Lakes District. We stayed away from big towns and cities and concentrated on the little, narrow white and yellow roads roaming through the gorgeous countryside seeing things, people and places that the usual tourist does not see. It was all wonderful being so up close and personal with the land and all it has to offer. Now, we are back home. Jerry is back out in the yard working hard every day and I am recuperating from surgery just laying around and being lazy.:) The best part about being here in Petaluma is that we are within visiting distance of Jenn, Susannah and Kevin and Lyle, Jean and four of our grandchildren. We had considered moving back to Utah in the fall, but have decided to stay here for a while longer until the housing market gets back on its feet. Allison is living in our Provo home and keeping it from getting lonely. Lisa, Bob and kids are enjoying their new pool/hot tub and are having a steady stream of company to help break it in. We may even try it out on our way back to Utah for the months of September and October.Happy birthday to Dewey! He's a hard man to get hold of, but it sounds like he had a super-duper birthday party!School is out, so we wish you all a happy summer with lots of fun, warm weather, good BBQ's and good family togetherness.Love,Marylyn (and Jerry)

Beautiful and hot today. We left at 8:40 a.m. arrived at Orem in fine shape. The Neil’s weren’t home. We had dropped Travis off at her apartment so she could pack. We had lunch, went back to Neil’s, checked at the church, no one. I had left my key home so we couldn’t get in. So LaVora got us a motel room. Dad and I went to sleep. LaVora and Travis had to wait for the Land Lady before Travis could check out. So we didn’t get back to Neil’s. LaVora called and told him where we were. Soon it was time to go to the B.Y.U. There were people all over the place. Merlin & Karen were waiting, Jerry & Sara, Newell & Adelia, Bill & Louise, Ralph Frank, Wayne & Vicki were all there to greet us. It was a thrill. Then Keith and his wife, Deward and Jil, Neil and Ella, Van and Charlene, Kerstin and Mark. What a reunion. Dad and I were ushered to a table at the front of the room. There were three other couples there. Each Lady had a big orchid. Rulen came to congratulate Dad. Rulen said he wouldn’t have known if I hadn’t written the note. We had a nice visit with the folks at our table. One was in the Stake Presidency and knew Deward as he is a member of the Bishopric in one of his wards. One couple was from Delta and the other was a member of the Scout Council. Dad got to see him but I didn’t. Soon the Beaver awards were presented to 32 Scouters. I think Dad was the oldest. We had help to get up the stairs and down on the other side. It was a thrilling experience. After it was over all the children and friends came to offer congratulations. I was concerned that we didn’t see Darrell and JoAnn before hand, but they were there. After it was over Karen Perry took pictures of all the family and friends. Keith and Linda had to leave, but Rulen came to visit with all of us and he was in the picture. A night to Remember. Neil, Ella, Darrell, JoAnn, Kerstin and Mark came to the motel for a little while. Dewey called to Congratulate Dad. LaVora was also honored and introduced by President Frandsen at the banquette for her part in Scouting and for coming so far to honor her father. Then soon all was over and we were Fast Asleep.

From Charlene
to see the plants and lawns so green...and full of
dandelions.
I am boxing up my belongings at Harvest Elementary
in preparation for the move to Bonneville here in Orem.
It will be nice to be closer to home, but I will miss the
people in Saratoga Springs.
Marc, Cami and Jordan are moving up the street
from their current home. They were able to get
a two year lease on the new place, so they will have
the security of knowing that they will be in one spot
for the rest of Marc's residency.
Van has had the opportunity to do some narration
projects for UVU. We hope for many more!
We also hope that all is well with each of you.
Happy Spring!

The middle of April I got to shovel a foot of snow from my driveway and side walks. Then this Saturday and Sunday we got some more snow. Winter just does not want to leave us. In between storms Sharon planted my peas.
Story Time
The little Plymouth Coop
There are lots of stories that one could tell about trips from Myton to Altonah and Bluebell. We could talk about tire repairs, the cars and trucks that sound “a Whoo-ga” as they went around a bend, the ones that dropped tie rods and left you on the edge of a cliff and etc. But the one I want to talk about here is the little Plymouth Coop similar to the one pictured here. Yes I know the one pictured here is a Chevrolet but it will do for an example. As I recall there was this night that we had been to Altonah to visit our Grandparents and as the story unfolds it was after dark when we were going home. In this little coop was Mother, Dad, Claude, LaVora, Neil and Dewey. How did we all fit in this little car? Well, like sardines. We were at what we always called the waterfall hill where the class C canal used to fall from this hill to the land below. Now days this place is known as Sand Wash Reservoir. As Dad was making one of the bends and crossing the bridge he ran our little car off the road and there, thank heavens, it high centered or we may have rolled to the bottom of the hill. Well, there we were with two wheels over the side of the road and two wheels on the road. Dad tried and tried to get it back on the road and each time he tried Mother would stand on the running board that was on the up hill side. At the time I thought she was doing this, so if the car rolled she would go with Dad. Now I realize that she was trying to add her weight to the car to make it more stable as Dad tried to get it back on the road. After a while Dad would give up this effort to get the car back on the road and walked to a near by house knocked on the door and woke up the family and asked for help. The farmer was good enough to get his truck, with its “AWhoo-ga” horn and come and pull our car back on the road. We were able to continue our trip home with out any other mishap. Claude said “I kept eyes on the road the rest of the way home”. He said “Wilmer, in a playful gesture, put his hand, once, over my eyes. We were safe and a little bit wiser.
Love you,
Neil
